The Advantages of Taking the Advanced Placement Computer Science Exam

BLUE STUDIOS: STEM CLASSES FOR KIDS
Taking advanced placement (AP) courses in computer science (CS) is often an excellent way for high school students to challenge themselves academically, prepare for the rigors of college course work and potentially gain college credit towards degrees in technical majors.
How AP CS courses can help you
The AP Computer Science Principles course is a national AP exam and is given during the junior or senior year of high school. Similar to AP Physics, AP CS is a rigorous course offered by thousands of schools across the country and your high school will need to have offered the course prior to taking the AP exam. The AP CS exam is an AP test that will be given in May or June of your senior year. Unlike AP Calculus AB which requires the option of an advanced placement test, AP CS is not offered in high schools. This means that those seeking to take the AP CS exam can only do so by taking the course prior to high school graduation. Because of the course's rigorous nature, it is recommended that students seriously consider taking the AP CS exam.
AP CS courses and how they work
Most AP CS courses, including those from Carnegie Mellon University, are a rigorous series of challenging courses that emphasize real world applications and practical design principles. They are developed by experts in their fields who strive to challenge the student intellectually as well as provide real-world scenarios and problem-solving. College counselors typically suggest these courses to students who are interested in careers in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), to add a critical thinking skillset to their resume and to have a head start in math and science. AP CS courses develop skills that are beneficial to every student in the world and not just those who go on to pursue careers in computer science.
AP CS courses and what they prepare you for
Students who take AP courses in CS can focus on topics they’re most interested in rather than trying to master a lot of the same material that they might take in a standard course in computer science. For some, this might mean challenging themselves to master topics that they’re less interested in while for others, it may be a chance to focus on topics that have been important to them throughout high school. Either way, the potential for a stronger understanding of coding and computer science concepts is there. It’s not just the breadth of material that you’ll be tested on either. The AP CS exams in 2017 and 2016 include writing about coding challenges, programming video games, and writing code for commercial applications (such as email, advertising, and business logic).
AP CS courses and how you can get credit
AP CS courses are an excellent way for high school students to test their skills and get credit towards their degree in a technical field such as computer science or software development. They can also serve as an additional tool to help prepare students for careers in these fields and help them get hired for internships and other opportunities in these fields. The advanced placement exam is used to test a student's knowledge in a technical field. The exam is geared toward helping students who are getting ready for college-level math and/or science courses. This is an excellent way for high school students to get exposure to a number of these technical subjects and learn about advanced math and science concepts that they may not have learned in regular classes.
AP CS course and how much time they take
Since the course is entirely done online (or offline in a virtual classroom), students often find it easier to manage the time commitment. This is especially true for students with busy schedules. Convenience Unlike traditional classrooms where a teacher might have 60 students or a few hundred students, AP CS has just one teacher for each course and one to one online group of students. Academic Benefits Students who took AP CS coursework had higher GPAs. They also scored higher on the ACT. Concerns Unlike other advanced placement courses, AP CS courses do not require you to do or complete a larger research project as a class assignment. However, this means that it is up to you to create and develop new knowledge and understanding as you go along.
When students choose to take the Advanced Placement Computer Science exam in their senior year of high school, it does mean that they will have to pay for the exam themselves. The potential benefits far outweigh this fee. If you want more information on the CS exam, check out this site.
